Dennis McGrath, Founder and Principal
ABOUT
I was born in Saint Louis and grew up in Southwest City. I completed my undergraduate work at the University of Kansas, earning a Bachelor of Architecture, a Goldwin Goldsmith Merit Scholarship, and placement in the fifth-year Internship Program. After graduation I lived and practiced architecture for 16 years in Minneapolis before returning to Saint Louis.
EXPERIENCE
Prior to establishing my own business, I was Design Director, and Practice Leader for ten years with the Lawrence Group, Saint Louis leading client interactive planning, programming, and design services, managing both internal staff, and external consultant teams on multiple projects. As a Senior Design Project Architect with the Target Corporation, I worked for ownership developing unique criteria, and skills to navigate the complexities of design, development, and construction, for complex mixed-use projects in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Saint Louis, ensuring a seamless collaboration between all stakeholders involved.
This dual experience of architect, and owner representative is an invaluable skill providing me with a deep understanding of the client perspective. My ability to navigate the critical path, and advise on project timelines is enriched by my experience serving both sides of the process. This skill allows me to anticipate, and address specific needs, goals, and concerns throughout the lifecycle of a project including design, budgeting, risk management, critical path scheduling, and complete project coordination. Overall, my multifunctional experience, and ability to seamlessly transition between these roles fosters a holistic approach, an asset that leads to successful, well-executed projects.
In my practice I excel at conceptualizing, and designing for both aesthetic and functional considerations. My creative expertise is complemented by a technical proficiency, ensuring that design is not only visually appealing but technically integrated. I strive for balanced projects where collaboration is required through team building with clients who understand the value of broadening the definition of design, and the role it has in shaping contemporary culture.
In my role as educator, I teach Environmental Systems II, Design Options-Studio, Degree Project Studio, and co-coordinate the Design Thinking and Pre-Design coursework in the graduate architecture program at Sam Fox School of Design.
